About First Lutheran
First Lutheran Church was organized by Swedish immigrants in Jamestown in 1856. The first church was constructed in the 1860’s at the corner of Center and Chandler Streets. Since that time, the congregation has seen many changes, including changes in membership and the replacement of the original wooden church with the current cathedral-like church that was completed in 1901 as part of a construction project that began in 1892. The adjoining Education Building and Chapel were constructed in the 1950s.
The church’s archives contains numerous historical documents and photographs. For research or genealogy inquiries, please contact the Historical Committee by calling the church office at 716-664-4601.
Our Pastors: 1856-present
Dan Nagle, Retired
Pastor Dan Nagle has served as pastor of First Lutheran Church since April 2011. Pastor Dan and Donna were married in 1975 at First Lutheran Church, Lynn, Massachusetts, Donna’s hometown. They have two adult daughters who are married and, with their husbands and four children, live in Ohio.
Pastor Dan is a Jamestown native, graduating from Jamestown High School in 1969. His church life in Jamestown had some variety. He was a member of First Lutheran Church until seventh grade. He then attended Brooklyn Heights Methodist Church where he was confirmed. He eventually joined First Covenant Church and was a member of that congregation while in high school and college. During those years, Pastor Dan was, for three summers, a counselor at Camp Mission Meadows on Chautauqua Lake.
Pastor Dan returned to the Lutheran church during his senior year of college and, following graduation, enrolled in the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago. While in seminary, he transferred his church membership back to First Lutheran Church, Jamestown and was ordained here on June 19, 1977.
Blessings to Pastor Nagle on his recent retirement.
